The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department operates in an increasing complex and demanding environment. Beyond its crucial mission of protecting the public safety, the Department faces a number of additional challenges in 2015. Some of these include creating the most effective vehicles for heightened transparency and civilian oversight, working with federal authorities to address concerns about conditions in the County’s jails, advancing strategies to replace the antiquated Men’s Central Jail and managing an inmate population that varies with the passage of new state laws. Each of these areas involves many participants and stakeholders and requires resources and/or new structures and approaches. Taken together, they represent a tremendous opportunity for the new Sheriff to set priorities, engage other stakeholders and manage a large-scale change effort.
